
Meet Dr. Lisa Ma

Dr. Lisa Ma (she/her) is a family physician and obesity medicine specialist with a clinical focus in weight management, psychotherapy, and disordered eating behaviours. Her work sits at the intersection of medicine, psychology, and behaviour change, helping patients better understand their relationship with food, health, and themselves.
Her interest in nutrition and the bio-psychology of eating began through her studies in Psychology, Physiology, and Nutrition at the University of British Columbia. She completed her medical degree at UBC and her residency training in Family Medicine at the University of Calgary.
Dr. Ma is a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine and has additional training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Mindfulness Based Eating Awareness Training (MB-EAT). She has previously served as President of the AMA Section of Generalists in Mental Health.
Dr. Ma is passionate about supporting patients with evidence-based, whole-person care that integrates medical treatment, psychological insight, and practical behaviour change. She supports patients navigating weight issues and disordered eating patterns, including emotional and binge eating, as they move toward sustainable change and a life that feels more like thriving.
