Curved Road Through Field

The Weight Triangle

Weight management is about more than just willpower.

When we struggle with our weight, it’s really easy to make it mean something about us.

I’m not disciplined enough.

I just need to try harder.

Why can’t I just do what I know I’m supposed to do?

But weight management doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

Every choice we make happens inside a body, a mind, and a life.

Another way to picture it: getting somewhere isn't just about how hard the driver tries.

It also depends on their skills behind the wheel, the car they’re driving, and the road they’re on.

Weight management is similar.

Your biology is the car, your psychology is the driver, and your environment is the road.

Together, they shape how much effort it takes to move in the direction you want.

Psychology

Your mind — the driver

Habits, emotions, stress, beliefs, self-talk and our relationship with food all shape what we do.

Sometimes we’re putting in a lot of effort, but that effort gets caught up in perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, shame or strategies that simply aren’t working for us.

Psychology influences how effectively we use our effort.

Biology

Your body — the car

Hunger, fullness, genetics, hormones, sleep, medications and health conditions can all change how hard a particular choice feels.

This means two people can make the same choice but need very different amounts of effort to do it.

Biology influences how much effort a choice requires.

Environment

Your life — the road

Our schedule, work, family, routines, culture, food environment and the people around us all shape our behaviour.

When the easier choice is also the choice we’re trying to make, we don’t have to rely on effort nearly as often.

Environment influences how often effort is required.

Where is the friction?

The goal isn’t to build infinite willpower. It’s to understand where the friction is.

Instead of only asking:

“Why can’t I just do this?”

Try asking:

Biology: Is something in my body making this harder right now?

Psychology: What am I thinking, feeling or doing automatically?

Environment: Is something about my setup repeatedly making this harder?

You may not be able to change everything.

But once you understand why something is hard, you have a much better chance of figuring out what might help.

In this video, I walk through the Weight Triangle and show how biology, psychology and environment can make the same behaviour feel completely different from one person to another — or even from one day to the next.
